I'm not using the Atmel tools at present. AVR Studio and AVR Studio32 are free, at least AVR Studio also contains an assembler. It's mostly used with free WinAVR (GNU) C-compiler. I would generally download the most recent final (not beta) version of the tools.

if you are still in need of an assembly to hex file converter..i could give you the software for that..it is somewhat part of MPLABIDE software(if you ever heard it)..but this software works fine for me..plus it is easy to use..if you would be interested with the software i've mentioned just tell me right away or drop ur email add..and ill send it to you..
