how to find out the current consumption of a microcontroller?

Check the datasheet, in the 'electrical parameters' or similar section. Use a microammeter in series with the supply to test it for real.

Remember that the consumption will vary with any power-saving or sleep modes, or what peripheral you use, so measure at different modes of operation. the more complex the MCU, the more variation you will experience.

It is also measured in mA/MHz.
So the faster the clock frequency, the more current drawn.
So for low current, use low speed clock.
