I learn a new language by reading example code. That gives me a quick working overview of the language. After that, I pick up language details from a formal book.
I use Verilog to design Xilinx FPGAs. I learned a lot from the Xilinx "XST User Guide" chapters "Verilog Language Support" and "HDL Coding Techniques". They focus on Verilog topics important to FPGA design. When I need more details, I read the IEEE 1364 Verilog standard.
