Level shifter as diode connected MOS

Hello

I have seen in many research articles about diode connected MOS as level shifter. How diode connected mos used as level shifter. Can some one help me I am new to this field of IC design.
 

When the signal is current, a diode drops (or raises) voltage
along the loop. Simple enough.

Not like it does anything much, actively, to "shift" a level
all by itself. More like it's along for the ride and you pick
a tap point.
 

Its like if I have a voltage lets say 0.5 V then by using a level shifter its going to increase the voltage to 0.5+0.7= 1.2 volts. Am I right?
 

Yes, but the "diode" is more like "along for the ride"
and the current source above, sink below do all the
work.

It's likely that a source follower and another load
will be a superior level shift in many cases (due to
high Zin, low Zout attributes as many level shifts
want more drive capability and can't take it from
the gain-stage limited current bias).
