im trying to light a 120v light bulb, i figured that since outlets put out 120v, i would just take a power cords from a lamp or something strip the ends and attach one end to the base of the light bulb and one to the side. Is this safe? and will it work?

Re: is this SAFE?

Hi Matt,

Is this safe ? Nope
Will it work ? Probably

Normally you would use a plastic or porcelain lamp socket
attached to a 4" octagon electrical box with a cord entering
the box with a proper strain relief connector.
Does the lamp have a standard size base like a 60W or 100W bulb?

Cheers,
Scanman

Re: is this SAFE?

Well, im trying to get the bulb to light without a holder, would it be possible to have wire connected to the terminals of the light bulb, then connected to the other components, then into the wall?

Yes..its possible to light a bulb when connected power to it terminals. The bulb will glow provided you have powered its filament inside. But 120 volts is hazardous and you will be at your own risking your life playing with power. Be sure to take precautions while handling.. Cheers

is this SAFE?

if you operate smartly...it will be safe.
remember to stand on a insulated desk when handling

Re: is this SAFE?

Standing on insulated desk will prevent earth return path, but won't help much if he touches woth live and neutral.
Mains voltage is very dangerous, and is not to be taken lightly! If you ask if it is safe it probably means you are not very well aware of risks, so DON'T do it.
Buy a proper socket, they're cheap.
