Is it possible to build a custom 32bit processor from scratch?

Say you want to build your own small custom microprocessor(tested first on FPGA then finalized to ASIC)how would you go about doing it?

Buy Microchip or similar factory, and as new owner give scratch plans to CEO. :smile:

I would start out by locking myself away in a quiet room for a few weeks with a good supply of strong coffee.

If you really want to do this, contact a silicon foundry first and find out their requirements.

Going from a FPGA to an ASIC means that you will go into a big production and that requires big money. So you have to be sure that there are no bugs in your design. And that it can run as well in an ASIC. I dont know if that is straightforward.
Altera offers a FPGA to ASIC solution called HardCopy. May be other vendors have a similar product.
