character recognition

hello everyone..
i m working on an image processing project..
it is a character recognition project..
it recognizes characters from the camera image a page of a book etc..
now i m having problems with italics font..
since i cut characters using the white space between them ,italics cannot be recognizes..
PLS do help me.
I m doin this is MATLAB
