Hello all!
I have built the ignitor circuit for a short-arc xenon lamp (figure of the circuit attached). I have one question - when the high voltage (15 kV - 20 kV) is generated in the secondary winding of the transformer of the stage II how is the DC power supply protected? Any diode with high reverse voltage or coil with high inductance?

Component values would be helpful.

Maybe you could disconnect the supply just before S2 is closed.

Could you please explain the theory of operation of the circuit? I am not sure I am seeing it correctly. It looks like S1 arms it and S2 fires it. But after S2 is closed, is Ilamp positive or negative?
