Hello, I don’t know if this is the right forum to post my question, but I have to start somewhere.
The case:
As so many people, I own a internet modem that doesn’t allow port forwarding to the broadcast address (xxx.xxx.xxx.255). Therefore I can’t use Wake On Line (WOL) from the internet. Somehow router manufacturers find this a security breach and don’t offer this functionality. Or maybe not many people request this feature and it is therefore neglected. If you do a search on WOL and port forwarding, you can read a lot more on the topic.
My Question:
Does anybody know of something I can hook up on my LAN and on which I can program a port forward? This way I can set up my router to port forward my magic packet to this black box that on his turn forwards it to the LAN broadcast address.
(Magic packet -> 200.37.94.50:7 -> internet modem -> 192.168.1.2:7 -> black box -> 192.168.1.255:7)
I could use an old 468 or so and program something in Linux but that way I just as easy could leave my other computer always on. The energy consumption will be the same.
I am looking for something cheap, small, quiet, and with very low energy consumption.
Is there a small circuit board on the market with network ability on which I could program a little function that forwards to the broadcast address? Like a NIC glued together with some RAM and a processor?
Hope you can advice me
Arjan
