how zener diode behaves if it is not working?

hi,
i am designed programmer ckt on bread board...in that ckt i placed zener diode ..so previously its working but after now its not.... i think zener might have gone(short ckted)...

i want to know that if zener diode gone(short ckt) how it behaves in ckt?.............................

check the forward and backward resistance using multimeter.. if both are same then the diode is bad... But this should be checked by removing the diode from the circuit usually,....
