How to test a diode or a transistor in a circuit to check if it is damaged?

hi,
i would like to know how to test a diode or a transistor in a circuit to check if it is damaged or not using digital multimeter?

thanks for the reply, does this way apply for an in-circuit transistor or should i remove it first from the circuit?

This method applies to not-installed transistors , however, in-circuit test may also be usefull if you take into account all surrounding components ..
For example, the resistance measured between C-E or E-C may not be ∞ ..

If tests are inconclusive, transistors have to be removed and tests should be repeated ..
