I'm using a linux server and I have deleted a directory of mine by mistake .. how can I recover/restore the deleted stuff, given that I'm only using a shell (no GUI) ?

On ext3 you have bad luck. AFAIK your only chance is to "grep" a known string of your lost file over the partition (/dev/hdX) to find the sectors where the file have been stored.
