S-parameter

I am measuring a cable with one end is open....i need to find out the loss of this cable. How can i do that ?

Re: S-parameter

With one end open you will get perfect reflection altered only by the cable loss round trip, so S11=twice the cable loss. That is as long as you can assume the open and is not acting like an antenna, that should be a good assumption into the low GHz for SMA cables.

Re: S-parameter

if you are measuring loss, you should measure S21 on a network analyser. Isn't that the loss that you really want?

S-parameter

cant measure s21 because its only a one port measurment if one end is open. S11 should do the job, another way is to compare a short to a matched load.

Re: S-parameter

It is very difficult since it is not a real open circuit. S21 should do its work.

Re: S-parameter

It is better to terminate the cable with a 50 ohm load, and get the S11 reading.

use smith chart
