Learn an HDL such as Verilog or VHDL.
Design your circuit using that HDL.
Choose a CPLD that's big enough to hold your design.
Compile and synthesize your HDL using software from the CPLD manufacturer.
Download the configuration file into the CPLD.

Basic is to hav a good idea of discrete digital design. The next step is to identify a CPLD and start using it by getting hold of the evaluation kit. Learn HDL side by side, as it will help in the long run.. I recommnd usin alteras chips, as their max+ii offers a graphic interface for the beginner...All the best

Re: cpld

hi. hope this will help you. the attachment is how to use the Altera quartus II and second one is a link on how to use the Xilinx cpld ISE (video tutorial). This are the two more famous CPLD/FPGA manufacturers.
Good digital design background will really help you out in CPLD designing.
