This is a part of the timing report I obtained after the nanoroute stage of my design in Cadence Encounter 9.1. In order to fix the set up violations, I would like to insert buffers or upsize the cells. But how do I know which cells should I upsize or where should I insert the buffers?
Can anybody please help?? Thanx in advance

1- do you run post-route optimisation (hold, setup&drv) after routing?
2- STA tool like primetime has command to analzyse and indicate which cell to change, based on that you return on the PnR tool and fix that.

Encounter ECO will do it for you by choosing the right buffer. It collects all the cells in the library which have function of buffer : a->y. It uses the timing of these buffers to insert wherever timing is violated. also it will automatically upsize the gates or change the VT types to reduce the negative slack to zero. all this is automatically done in the tool.
You can always control the priority in which you want to do this...whether you Vt swap or gate upsizing to higher priority

HI,
it's hard to tell you like this because we don't know the design and after effect of any change. most of the tool have some commands or in few cases companies have their internal procedure or wrapper to find out the list of such places.
basically it's a iterative process, change the cell type of add the buffer and then check other paths. also you have to check other things also, like congestion, power and lot of other things. so it's difficult to tell just by seeing the report what's the exact cell or place.
If you need concept - I can help you in that.

Look for the cells, which had more than 200-300ps delay and have more fanout or cap value. Those are the cells need to be targetted to replace to get good timing values. report_alt_lib (in synopsys) gives alternative lib cells.

Does this means you want to fix this path manually?
If yes, please choose upsize or swap Vth of cells which have big delay or big fanout.
Dont forget to check margin of HOLD path through these cells before you choose them.
