How to count No.of event occur on port pin

Hi im using atmega32, im doing a Automatic parking system,for that im using IR Tx & Rx to detect car on each parking slot
i want to show a green led if parking slot is empty and red led if parking slot is fill with a car,
and also i need to calculate the total cars on the parking bay.
can any one help me to solve my problem

You will need 200 pairs of IR RX Tx if you have 200 parking slots according to your design.

i think no need to have 200 tx and rx also.
if you want to show the result of combine. means if there is parking slot is empty anywhere in parking area or parking is totally full then you will need only one IR rx and tx.
if you want to show individual effect that at this point parking is empty then you will need that much as jayanth.devarayanadurga said.

Well here are some popular solutions.
1. Use Timer in counter mode. configure accordingly to edge detection required
2. Poll the pin continuously
3. Use external interrupt (set according to specification)
