Hi,
I need to construct a 4 bit binary counter as a project in my class. I have a breadboard, some capacitors, resistors, 9v battery with battery snaps, 7 seg disp, 10 seg LED disp, 555 timer, wires, pushbutton switch, and some gates. The problem is I don't even know where to begin. I have no experience with circuits and this is my introductory class. Can anyone please help me?!?!?! I'm desperate.

With the information we've supplied you, you should be able to make significant progress. Let us know how it works out. Rather than spelling it out, we (I) have supplied you with enough information for you to proceed, but if you still have questions, let us know specifically where you get stuck!
Usually we use red for positive supply and black for gnd, other than that i don't think there is a standard code for wire colors for a project like yours that has no connection to any interface (vga,usb...etc), at least i don't know any.
