How to achieve communication between uC and Android phone

I want to control hardware through Android, but first only just through cable, not BT or WIFI modules. Is it possible to configure USB port of phone to achieve some kind of serial communication. Any complete project?

I excpected more explaination about type of that serial communication and maybe some source code for Android. And I want to build it alone, so no final products.

Note the fact that very little android devices support the direct UART function. I would suggest using the solution 2 route if you plan on wanting the direct UART
