How does a USB Flash drive work?

If I'm not mistaken, the memory used in the USB Flash drive is 'flash memory'. When new data is written to the drive, does the drive require to be erased first before writing?
 

yes but not whole of flash.
it is done in its chip.
in its hardware or firmware.
The flash memory, like hard disk, divided into page and sector.
each time one section , sector or page (each on smaller) manipulated.

check out NAND flash or NOR flash from STMicro or Samsung. There are application notes on to do that.
