Home application controller through PC

Usually beginners start with something like blinking of a LED or light.
Controlling (switching On or OFF) of a LED or light will do or you are looking for a complex application with advanced features.
If the above referred concept is workable then the task is easy, you will be able to successfully implement it independently using the following link

The basic idea is to use PC printer port and control one pin.
If you need to control light, fan or TV like home appliance, then one can use a relay and necessary driving circuit based on transistor or otherwise.
