i want to make a 1GHz frequency counter that could read analog or digital signals, the input signal voltage could be 50mv or 10v for example so i need a pulse shaper circuit, i thought of a schmitt trigger but the problem is the high input frequency, is there any way to shape the signal to pulses of 0-5V? i am going to use PIC16F84A.
You can use VHF/UHF prescaler circuit with sensitivity of ≈10mV (max 300mV) and frequecies up to 1000MHz: https://www.qsl.net/zl1bpu/micro/CNTR/Prescaler.htm
This will "boost" the input voltage to ≈1V and divide the input frequency by 64/256.
If you measure lower frequency signals you can connect the input directly to the attached circuit.
