Hello!

I think you're walking on a wrong path. You're going to do a PhD, which means
that you are already (or at least you should be) a specialist in this field. Who
better than you should know the hot topics? And you are asking that to people
you don't know, who are not specialists (including me)... This sounds like a very
uncommon way of starting a PhD.
It sounds like those kids in junior high who ask "what should I study? Economics,
medical or engineering?".

Well thanks for the reply.
I am collecting the experiences of others too so that it would be helpful to choose the most exciting topics.
About me I had being focusing on only one field of Wavelength division multiplexing and I have been told to choose a different topic.
That's what making me confused now.
So collecting some ideas and experiences !!!!

there are many parts of the optical communication,except the WDM which is just a part of the fiber optic network u mention above.there are fiber optic transceiver,fiber optic transmission and the other fields in the fiber optical communication u could try to realize or learn.
recently,there is a hot topic in this industry:the news"Google is backing a $300mil fiber network pipe between US and Japan, planned for 2016 ",it cause many people of this field interested in it so that many topics about it appears in many forums or experts communities .
u can also join some experts communities to pick your inspiration about your phd topic.
