Help me find a solution for a project of wireless network of sensors

hi i ve been assigned to make a network of different sensors mounted on different places the sensors have to communicate wirelessly with the server......!!!

can any one suggest any cheap solution of this project....

i am concerned with the wireless transmitter and receiver is there any
module which is cheap and has a small range...!!!
