help in shaft or motor encoders

I am working on a project in which i need to continuously measure a distance and then take a turn RIGHT or LEFT or stop at a particular point .....which type of encoders i can use ...?? absolute or incremental encoders............

Either one. But for the same resolution, absolute encoders will be much more expensive. On the othe hand, incremental encoders require a zero resetting operation when started from an unknown position.

Please give me some tutorials on Quadrature/Incremental Encoder which could measure a distance by using arduino or any other microcontroller
 

Check if there are available some Arduino designs based on microcontrollers - such as pic30f6010 and lm3s6965 - which have built in circuitry proper for interface with incremental Encoder devices.

Can I use shaft encoders in case of non- wheeled bots or bots with crawling mechanism???
