GSM Module/Chip

I'm looking for info for my final thesis.

I'm looking for a cheap GSM Quadband module transceiver to connect with a MCU over serial port.
All i want is send and recieve SMS messages or call a cell phone number and send DTMF signals...

Also, i saw some GSM modules that also have TCP/IP stack embedded... what are they for? how do i work with them from the MCU?
