Electromechanical relay - max. switching voltage

Hi,

I have one question regarding electromechanical relays. In all datasheet is stated maximum swithing voltage for example 400V. Some company defines this voltage in their definitions that is actually maximum RMS value that relay can handle. Is this true in general or differ from company to company?

Thank you for reply. Yes that is true. But AC is this case is RMs or Peak?

For voltage manufacturers usually specify informations as DC or AC voltage.

RMS my friend.


For peak voltage multiply RMS with 1.414 (x2 for AC).


Vrms = 0.7 × Vpeak
Vpeak = 1.4 × Vrms

These equations also apply to current. They are only true for sine waves (the most common type of AC) because the 0.7 and 1.4 are different values for other shapes. The RMS value is the effective value of a varying voltage or current. It is the equivalent steady DC (constant) value which gives the same effect.
