Effect of pressure on chips

What happens to a chip when it's maximum pressure is exceeded? I know some data sheets specify a maximum pressure, but what is the failure mode there? Will it just quit working or will performance degrade?
 

The chances are that the package will bend slightly leaving microscopic cracks for water vapour to get in. So in the short term -not a lot, in the longer term total failure depending on the ambient temperature and humidity.
