hi
I want to ask about the difference between DSP and microprocessor
and microcontroller....
thanks

Re: DSP VS MP

DSP is a microprocessor whose architecture and instructions-set are optimized to perform signal processing efficiently.

Re: DSP VS MP

It looks like this is one of the most frequently aked questions
This subject has been covered in other messages . You should do some search and elektroda . search on both "microcontroller, microprocessor"
and "DSP , microprocessor, CPU "

Re: DSP VS MP

generally, microcontrollers have more means for interfacing peripheral devices, whilst DSPs have more sophisticated core for computing

Re: DSP VS MP

The DSP is a special purpose processor.
There is no OS surport, such as Windows or RTOS.

Re: DSP VS MP

Hi hichen

It is not quite correct that in general digital signal processors don't have
OS / RTOS

For example TI has developed quite versatile RTOS for their TMS320 DSPs.

Best regards

I think there's a lot of OS that coul be used on specific DSP, such as Nucleus, Virtuoso etc. One example among all : http://blackfin.uclinux.org/

and also one could refer to the (not-updated) faq from the newsgroup comp.dsp at : **broken link removed**

DSP VS MP

The DSP is faster than the microprocessor
and microcontroller. It acts more excellent on digit
processing.

Yes, but most popular OS like win-ce and linux seems will not support DSP.
There are many reasons, I can only tell three:
First, DSP is not a big market for OS developer to pay effor to port their OS. And most general DSP don't need OS at all.
Second, most DSP don't include MMU and support less peripherals. It's not naturally to run OS.
Third, some platform like TI OMAP and Philips 8850 use one DSP and one general purpose CPU to run OS. This architecture seems more and more popular. OS can be easily run on the MP. DSP only do computing.
