practically speaking, how does a DC drive detects a motor's speed using armature voltage feedback?

since
Vsource = IR+CEMF
CEMF= Vsource - IR

How does a DC drive know what the CEMF is if it doesn't know what the amature resistance is? I work with a lot of DC drives and I never have to input the amature resistance during the DC drive programming process.
