am a novice to designing.
i'd appreciate if u can help me with step to step information in designing a 12v dc battery charger using proteus. i will as well appreciate information on any basic design you felt might help me. thanks

First things first. What is the required current output? Elaborate your problem. Do you intend to charge a Lead-acid battery or some other type?

A charger will first give constant current to the battery, and when the battery voltage is charged up to a threshold, say 10V in your application, it transits into constant voltage mode, in this mode the 12V of the charger output will feed the battery through the path with charger output res, lead and contact res. This is the basic principle, and as the transition between constant current and constant voltage mode, the charger need be capable of detect the battery voltage and temperature. Less or more protection function is needed such as UVLO and over thermal loaded. I'd like to recommend you to find a charger IC to use after reading its datasheet.

Charge from the offline power source, AC-DC adapter output or other source?

So you must have known the VIN, i.e. the output of the AC-DC converter. **broken link removed**
in this page you can try to find your appropriate charger IC. Chemistry is important, though you have told it's 12V gadget, it may be SLA, also may be stacked other battery, or only a capacitor.
