regenerative divider
There is an analog method that goes back prior to 1939. It was commonly used in the prewar FM broadcast stations in the US. It is all analog and produces the lowest phase noise of all. It is called a regenerative divider.
You put the signal you want to divide into a mixer. The IF output is filtered to the signal frequency that is 1/N that you want. This signal is also multiplied by N-1 and filetered and amplified and used for the local oscillator drive. You can also use the method of switching the signals going to the RF and LO depending upon which way is more convenient.
This method does not work if you take the sum frequency out of the IF.
