i would like to get some information on functions that are used for converting cursive hand written documents to editable format (ie detect the hand written words and letters) using matlab.

iam using matlab for this purpose.can u suggest me a better method for segmentation of letters

You can use Morphological techniques like open or close. You can find standard functions for these in Matlab.
