Cross compiling for NIOS2

If I have gawk 3.1.1 source, how do I cross-compile so it can run on uclinux running on NIOS2 soft processor?

If you have gnu tools for NIOS II, it is straight forward.

I have tried the buildroot method here:

I made the changes, but the resulting binary is not FLAT format. I can't execute it on NIOS2. I can execute it my x86 linux machine however.

Did you set your target architecture and the tool chain properly in build root?
