Channel Equalizer Theory

Hello!

Channel Equalizer solve the problem of ISI so it improves the received signal. But if I use it in a communication system, doesn't it affect the bit rate? And it adds processing and receiving delays. Is there a way so that adding a channel equalizer doesn't affect the bit rate and add delays?
