I would like to know if the change in slope of a mountain can be depicted by measuring the change in edges directly on two images taken separately on different years.

I hypothesize that it would give erroneous results, however would like to have some reference for the same. I believe Elevation model to some extent may give the true measure, if we measure change in slope area, rather than measuring the change in slope from edges (applying sobel operator) would do.
