Can serial and parallel ports be controlled in VB 2005?

I wanted to ask if the serial and parallel ports be controlled in VB 2005 like in VB 6?
I downloaded a couple of books about serial and parallel ports in VB 6 by Jan Alexon but I am not sure whether the code examples of those books would work in VB 2005.
