It's according to your specifcation, as far yet told. You may want to me more specific, if you have additional requirements.
1 mm pitch connectors aren't smaller as far as I'm aware of, e.g. PCI express card socket is the same size. Of course, smaller pitch connectors are availiable from various vendors.
P.S.: I wonder if indirect connectors are better suited. They can be considerably smaller than direct connectors and you don't need the galvanical "heavy" gold plating in PCB production.
Sorry I wasn't more specific, its sometimes so stuck in your head when you've been eating and breathing a problem that you forget not everyone "knows what you know" about it.
It looks like the DM-72P that ROB B mentions above is the beasty I am after( if I can source it in any quantities), even the fact that it is vertical works, as that was a longer term goal, I was going to settle for flat mount if I had to, but vertical is choice, again something I didn't include originally.

Any idea is welcome, I am not locked into anything, except that I need it to be stable sourced so it can be produced in quantity.
Thanks again for your help and please feel free to continue if you can elaborate on "indirect connectors"

This would be one solution but the website might have some other suitable connectors.
The SODIMM72 is 1.27mm pitch and the vertical mounting socket will be easier to solder without using a stencil and reflow. I think some of the pins in a horizontal mounting one (like in a laptop) might be obscured for hand soldering (if you are hand soldering).
Go to this link then Alphabetical Search By Series and look for DM-72P.

What's your footprint size restriction?
This looks to be the whale I be looking for, even the fact that it is vertical is good because that was a longer term goal, I was going to settle for flat mount and hope to find vertical.
Now the quest begins to source in quantity or find an equivalent, although as i said Im still open to other ideas, this is definitely the right track.
My foot print is to daughter board a parent board that is about 2.7 inches to 3 inches square(68.5mm to 76.2mm) with components on the parent board the mini pci connector was a tight fit at 59.5mm ( I am not using mini pci connector or circuits ) which set my goal at closer to 48mm to 52 millimeter in size target.

The DM-72p you suggested comes in at 44.45mm so well with in the target with the minimum connector count of 72.
All of the dimensions for the card edge were internal, so there is the over head of the locking mechanism which with every other choice put it outside the parent board footprint but the DM-72p full width ( socket and lock wings / full assembly ) comes in at 61.9mm which is well within the parent board width 68.5mm minimum.
So it is definitely the right ballpark if I can source it, if I cant source ( at least in the thousands ) then the quest begins to find an exact cousin to the DM-72p

Upon further review of the full data sheet for the DM-72p it is close, but it is a little too tall, its 14mm what I need is closer to the dimm socket height between 5.5mm and 8mm vertical.
But I am on the trail none the less.
Still looking any help would be appreciated.
