i was looking to invest on a really good benchtop dc power supply. what are the most reliable brands to choose from? thank you.

Lots of brands available, something like a 0-20V 4A would be about $150. I have had this for years, and never had a problem with it, and it was low cost. I'm unsure if it is worth spending too much more. But then I don't tend to have
very high current or very high voltage demands, and others might.
I tend to use that PSU, and a variety of fixed-voltage switched-mode supplies (5V, 12V, 48V) for whenever I need that particular voltage..

If you are looking for a little more power (over 20V and 20A) I like the Sorensen units. Agilent and Magna Power are good too.
