Barrel Distortion fixing methods

I am doing a project about fixing barrel distortion over images. I could create a tool can model distortion, but I can not determine the level of distortion without any pre-information. Is there any solution for this problem? Thank you in advance.

As far as I know [I was playing around with doing something similar] you need a reference of some sort, although I was exploring different types of distortion caused by lenses.
