Autonomous Obstacle Detection And Avoidance Quad-Copter

I am working on student project named "Autonomous Obstacle detection and avoidance Quad-Copter". I am using audupilot mega (APM) 2.6 controller board. My question is whether ultrasonic range finder sensors can be interfaced with APM 2.6 or not ? i want to interface approx 8 sensors.

Ultrasonic sensor(s) can be interfaced with Ardupilot.But,will you connect them as input to port pin(s) or UART?
In this system,sensor(s) are interfaced through UART.
