I need to add an on/off capability to a 12VDC motor control circuit in an automotive application. The load (DC motor) can draw up to 45A. There are many low cost automotive relays rated for 50 to 70A, however this is a resistive load rating. My experience is that when switching inductive loads these relays have a tendency to weld the contacts at much lower currents.
I'm thinking that a FET may be a better choice.
