Hi!
I'm looking to amplify a small signal RF signal using a circuit to increase the power (and hence the range).
I've been recommended a common FET amplifier, I just wanted to check; is this what I should be looking at for my purposes?
If not, can someone point me in the right direction?

sounds like you are not too familiar with rf circuit design. Why dont you go to Mini Circuits web seite and pick out a nice amplifier where all the design work is done for you.

Yes if you are working on RF signal or amplifying any singnal it can be use with low_pass filter but you need find out any high frequency FET which is suitable for your's circuit.
