Hello,

My question regards to the "assignment editor" plug-in of the Quartus II software.
As far as I understand, this tool allows to manually set the inner fittings of the implemented logic to FPGA resources.

Is this correct?
Can you please give an example of when you had to use the tool?

You can use it to assign things in you project. It's mostly used to assign the top level signals to the device pins.
Yes you can use it to assign specific resources in your design to specific FPGA resources - but you would rarely do that.

I use the pin planner for that...what added benefit the assignment editor has over it?

I mostly use the Assignment Editor if I have to remove settings or want to try out some setting change or simply want to view the settings if I think something is amiss.
