There could be lots of reasons ::
1) Air filter is chocked
2) Low Gas Level
3) Evaporator fins r chocked
4) Dirt in the Condenser fins
5) Fans r running at low speed
6) broken insulations on Suction & discharge lines
7) compressor performance has degrade
8) check the Thermostate is working fine (+ Electronic circuit)
9) check the relay that triggers the compressor motor is working fine.
10 never expose ur outdoor compressor unit directly to the sunlight use some shade (split type)
Right now I am having a new natural gas furnace (96% efficient) and a new air conditioner (very efficient) installed.
My old ones wasted a lot of energy and were worn out. My government is paying a high rebate for their high efficiency and I will save a lot of money on natural gas and electricity.
