The problem is usually the current drawn by a low active power factor device, which much higher than the current required. This increases the costs of generating and transporting the electricity. In order to reduce the environmental impact of power generation and limit the disturbance of other loads on the same utility network, there are guidelines to limit the harmonic distortion of power supplies. The solution to low power factors and too many harmonics is power factor correction. Such circuits shape the input current of the power supply in such a way that the active power from the network is maximized and harmonic distortion is minimized.
