LEM has a similar idea, but requires special attention to the PCB since the current does not pass through the IC (as it does in the Allegro case)

Of course you can also simply sense across a resistor- it depends if you need isolation
You can use bolometry -- run the AC current through a resistive load, then measure the temperature. This is done in some older high-end RMS Voltmeters... Jim Williams has some literature on the topic. Search LTC's appnotes.
1. Hall-effect current sensors.
2. Resistive (voltage drop across ressitor) current sensors.
