About MAC instruction and barrel shifter?

Hi, everybody!
If we want to implemented the MAC instruction, Why do we need the barrel shifer to accellerate its speed?

Because shifters are simpler and faster than multipliers?
 

Thanks for your reply, But i saw some chapters told me that "barrel shifter which can make any bits shift can accelerate the DFT algorithm", why the DFT algorithm which is implemented on DSP chip needs any bits shift, needs barrel shifter?
