A remote-controlled “car” with 4x4 drive

User “drzasiek” presents his project of a remote-controlled car with 4x4 drive made with no financial outlays, simply of “trash”.
Assumptions:
-4-wheel drive
-a field protector
-a steering front axle
-a differential

Two differentials were intended to be made, but finally one differentiating right and left wheels was made.
The mechanism is very simple and made of a mechanical car millage meter. A big sprocket inside drives a smaller one operating on the independent wheel, which, in turn, drives other smaller one, thereby it reverses the direction of rotations, and that one drives a big wheel on the other side. A transmission between two small sprockets inside had to be made of a gear with triangular teeth to avoid jamming.


The wheels were recycled from an old racing car. The slanted protector was made of adhesive rubber strips. Power is transmitted to the wheels through portal axles made by inserting internal gears from the mileage meter in the wheel.


The whole frame is metal, soldered with half-shafts.


Next, the wheels and portal axles with the direct gears from the differential and pulleys were fastened to the drive of front wheels.


The half-shafts were fastened to the front axle using bolts and nuts to avoid using unnecessary cotter pins and blocks that can fall out.


The articulated joint was made of a small aluminum cuboid with four-sided,1mm holes, in which wires appropriately bent into shape and soldered to the axel on both sides operate.

The wheel steering was made of a modified driver of a movable laser in a CD player.
The wheel steering is without an automatic return to straight drive on purpose.

LI-ION Panasonic batteries from an old laptop were used. They were assembled over the stiffer rear axle.


The controlling panel was adapted from a broken miniature car. Steering was directly connected to the board. If it comes to the drive, a relay-transistor driver had to be used because of a big engine from a driver.
