8051 versus basic microcontrollers

Hi all,

I would like to know what could 8051 processor offer more than a regular microcontroller? is it more cheap? why could I choose it if I have an alternative microcontroller which can implement the same function?
 

Hi,
8051 is one of the most regular microcontrollers in the market with abundent wealth of software and hardware circuits freely available on internet. But if you want to use any other microcontroller, no body would restrict you.

does the 8051 have any special features like an RF antenna, or any special features?

also, is it still cheaper to use??

Have look at Ateml , NXP semiconductors and Silicon Lab for varieties of 8051 family controllers available. Regarding price, the basic models are really cheap.

One of the major reasons is that they are produced by multiple manufacturers. They are fairly easy to program and there are many options available in the 8051 family. But one always has to consider what compilers / development systems are available. Are they easy to program etc. Do some investigation for 8051, AVR and Pics and see what is available and what suits your budget
 

8051 refers to the core processor. All other things like ADC, rf transceivers, USB and so on are a proprietary implementation of the chip designer. Philips does it there way, Analog Devices does it their way. And Atmel does it another way. You probably want to go with the device that is simplest to program and has the peripherals you need.

Also, you probably won't find a cheaper micro than an Atmel 805X, and you probably won't find a more high end micro that an Analog Devices 805X. It's all in what you want.
