optocoupler application ac mains monitoring

I am looking to sense a 110 Vac input while outputting a binary 1 or 0 (+5v for sensing 110 Vac and 0v for when 110 Vac is turned off).
The binary needs to be the input to a PIC microcontroller.

you can use a transformer to step down to 5V
use a diode to rectify and a capacitor.

when the pic measures the capacitor voltage, when it detects 5V 100VaC is on line

Use a SPDT Relay

AC mains monitoring can be done with optocouplers .. see pictures below ..
Detailed description of these circuits can be found at:

Considering the extent of what I am trying to accomplish, transformers would be too bulky. Relays would probably introduce contact bounce.
The opto solution looks to be the best. I will research and calculate to try a viable solution.
Thank you one and all for your valued input.
